Quick Tips for Using COLUMBUS

Export Coordinates

Exporting coordinate data to a delimited text file

Coordinate data within COLUMBUS can be easily exported to an ASCII (Text) file of your design. Using the Export option, you can choose the coordinate fields (for example, lat, long, elev, State Plane north, etc.) to export and arrange those fields in the resulting file in the order you prefer. You can also establish your own custom delimiter between each field instead of the more commonly used comma character (",") as a delimiter.

Results from all coordinate computation areas within COLUMBUS can be "Kept" into memory, then exported at your convenience.

Assuming you have coordinates in memory, follow these steps to export them:
  1. From the Options menu, select Export File Setup | User Defined and establish the order of station coordinate components to export.

For example, if you have several State Plane coordinates in your file in the order "Station Name,North,East", you would create a list in the order: Station Name, State Plane North, State Plane East.

  2. Set the delimiter to the comma character (",").

  3. Click OK.

  4. From the Tools menu, select User Defined XPort. Select the stations to export, then click OK. You will be prompted for an output file; specify the file to export the coordinates to.

Note: User Defined XPort will not be enabled if the settings made in Step 1 above do not reflect the data in memory (in other words, if in the example above you have no Station Names and no State Plane coordinates in memory).

  5. Examine the resulting output file. If you selected a station to export which does not have State Plane coordinates (north and east), the exported result for that station will look something like the following:

    Apple Mountain,######,######

Hint: By using the comma character for a delimiter and saving to an export file with extension *.csv, you can easily load the resulting file into Microsoft Excel for further manipulation.
