Coordinate Transformation FAQs
Back to FAQs
I was recently given over 150 stations with known NAD 83 State Plane coordinates. I need to transform these to NAD 83 UTM coordinates. How can I do this within COLUMBUS?
First, they must be loaded into COLUMBUS. You can either create a COLUMBUS
ASCII (Text) data file and load them all at once, or you can enter them
within the DATA - STATIONS - STATE PLANE grid.
COLUMBUS also supports input from "comma-delimited" type
coordinate files generated by COLUMBUS and
other COGO/CAD packages.
Set up the applicable State Plane and UTM projection zones.
Once the data are in the project, transform the State Plane coordinates to geodetic coordinates, then Keep them into the current project. The geodetic coordinates can then be transformed
directly to UTM coordinates.
I have just performed a network adjustment yielding 2D geodetic
coordinates. Must I first keep these coordinates into the project in
order to compute State Plane coordinates for each station?
No. Simply bring up the Network Adjustment View (the one with the error
ellipses visible) and proceed to the TOOLS - TRANSFORMATION - STATE PLANE
to GEODETIC dialog box.
All transformation computations will be based on
the current adjusted geodetic coordinates.
Alternatively, you can simply bring up the Adjusted State Plane Coordinate view.
Be sure you have set up the applicable State Plane zone in the OPTIONS - PROJECTION ZONES - STATE PLANE ZONES dialog.
